FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Can I learn both Kendo AND Naginata?
A: No, it’s EITHER Kendo OR Naginata. However, during the March and September new student registrations you can try both to see which one you prefer to practice.

Q: Does the children’s class also use the March and September semester system?
A: No, children can join at any time during the year.

Q: What equipment do I need to buy to start?
A: To start, nothing. However, after the first few weeks, you’ll need to purchase a shinai (for Kendo) or a naginata depending on which you’re practicing. Most students don’t buy a uniform until later in the semester, but prior to Bogu (armor) testing.

Q: If I don’t need a uniform right away, what do I wear to practice?
A: Regular gym wear is just fine. T-shirt and shorts or sweat pants work nicely.

Q: When do I get the body armor?
A: At the end of your first semester, there’s an in-house grading to determine if you can proceed to practice in Bogu (armor) for the next term. If you pass, you get permission to buy your Bogu and start practicing at the senior student level. If it’s decided that you’re not yet ready, then you’ll continue the next semester without Bogu.

Q: When and where are practices held?
A: Please click the Practices link above.

Q: I’ve practiced Kendo or Naginata before at another dojo. Do I have to wait until March or September to join?
A: No, if you have previous experience with Kendo or Naginata you can join us at any time.

Q: What if I need to take time off for personal reasons, or if I decide this isn’t for me?
A: Please e-mail us to let us know if you’re leaving for any reason. You can provide as much detail as you like, but at the very least tell us if this is a temporary or permanent departure, and if you want to be removed from the club e-mail news list.

Q: If I leave and come back, do I have to pay the registration fee again?
A: No. Once you’ve paid the registration fee, that’s it. It’s a one-time cost.

Q: How do I register?
A: You may download the registration form or pick up one up at any practice. See the Registration page for more information.
