Naginata
What Is Naginata?
Naginata is the study of the use of a bladed spear-like weapon, similar to the European halberd or glaive. Unlike the sword, the Naginata is held on either side of the body and can be used for attack or defense from many different postures.
Naginata techniques often involve large sweeping motions, which help to develop balance and coordination of the body. The practicing of shiai (sparring) will develop one’s strength and endurance while the practicing of kata (technique training) will develop an individual’s poise and dexterity.
Individuals of all ages and skill levels can enjoy participating in Naginata. Like all budo (martial arts), training in Naginata is not just an endeavor to improve oneself physically, but an endeavor to learn and promote the concepts of honor, respect, and understanding of all individuals.
The Concept Of Naginata
