WHAT IS ISR?
Intellectual Social Responsibility (ISR) extends beyond the traditional realm of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which primarily focuses on the involvement of established businesses in social development. While CSR often emphasizes environmental, philanthropic, educational, and research initiatives, ISR highlights the significance of social-cultural contributions that can enrich society in various ways. It emphasizes the responsible utilization of intellectual abilities, creative talents, and resources to address societal challenges, promote cultural growth, and foster a sense of shared well-being.
Intellectual Social Responsibility (ISR), refers to the ethical and voluntary commitment of individuals to contribute to the intellectual and social development of society through the utilization of their thoughts, intelligence, and talents. Coined by Enamul Karim Nirjhar, a filmmaker and cultural personality from Bangladesh, ISR emphasizes selfless engagement in social-cultural development from one’s position or domain of expertise. This concept encourages individuals to make intellectual and creative investments aimed at benefiting the welfare and progress of the people.
In summary, ISR emphasizes the responsibility of individuals to dedicate their intellectual and creative capacities for the betterment of society, contributing to social-cultural development and promoting the greater good of the people.
WHY IS ISR NECESSARY?
In the present context, there is a significant need for ISR as social responsibility extends beyond organizations alone. It is essential for individuals to take up the responsibility of promoting intellectual creativity and free-thinking practices in society. While organizations possess greater capacities to fulfill social responsibilities, individuals can contribute through their talents. This notion gave rise to the concept of Intellectual Social Responsibility (ISR), which emphasizes an individual’s role in fulfilling social-cultural responsibilities towards society.
ISR can be practiced in various fields such as education, research, and culture. Both ISR and CSR can work in tandem, complementing each other. When CSR and ISR are effectively combined, it requires a skilled team to implement creative intellectual work. This can lead to the creation of employment opportunities for a significant number of people. Moreover, the outcomes of intellectual and creative investments often manifest as artistic works, which play a vital role in enhancing the psychological well-being of society and its individuals.
THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF ISR
A prime objective of ISR is to selflessly contribute to social-cultural development using one’s intellect, intelligence, and talent. Enamul Karim Nirjhar, an architect with extensive experience, exemplifies this motto through his successful designs for the AMAR EKUSHE BOOK FAIR in 2019, 2020, and 2021. His intelligent application of talent demonstrates his commitment to creative social responsibility. The thoughtful design of the book fair has enhanced convenience for attendees, buyers, sellers, and publishers, streamlined management, and added to the fair’s overall beauty. Additionally, Nirjhar has designed various social institutions, including schools and hospitals, as part of his ISR practice. Currently, he is engaged in constructing a hospital named AMADER HASPATAL as another endeavor aligned with his ISR principles.
To promote the concept of ISR, Nirjhar has initiated the NOY BOCHORER BORO (I AM 9 PLUS) project through his organization, EK NIRJHOR COLLABORATIONS (EKNC), showcasing his intellectual creativity. This project entails a comprehensive plan for social-cultural development. By synergizing CSR and ISR, the NOY BOCHORER BORO project aims to release 63 original Bangla songs across nine albums. This initiative not only establishes a livelihood platform for artists but also enriches the collection of Bengali original songs. The combination of these outcomes fosters a positive trend in Bengali music practice. Additionally, the project includes the production of nine independent films, driven by the spirit of independence. If the coupling of CSR and ISR continues, it has the potential to bring about a revolutionary transformation.
